Hike to Chabenec
Ascent of Chabenec
Chabenec (1 955 m n. m.) is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Low Tatras, rising along the main ridge between the Ďurková saddle and the summit of Ďumbier. It attracts hikers and ski-tourers with its panoramic views of the Western Tatras, the Liptov Basin, and Horehronie. The ascent combines mountain wilderness with easy ridge terrain and offers year-round opportunities to explore the landscape.

Skimo on Chabenec
In winter, Chabenec becomes a rewarding challenge for skimo enthusiasts. The route is popular for its favourable gradients and intuitive terrain. Most people start from Magurka, one of the best-known access points in the Low Tatras.
Skimo route from Magurka:
- Distance: 8 km (ascent and descent).
- Elevation gain: approx. 900 m.
- Time required: the ascent takes about 3 hours, and the descent is far quicker – 30 to 45 minutes, depending on conditions.
From Magurka, the route follows a forest track to an upland meadow before opening onto broad slopes suited to both climbing and descending. While most skimo enthusiasts head for Chabenec, you can remain on the ridge and continue towards other summits. Always check the avalanche forecast, as conditions in the Low Tatras can change quickly.
On the descent, several lines are available, depending on the snowpack, but safety and avalanche awareness are essential throughout. The route is ranked medium in terms of technical difficulty and is ideal for those looking for a genuine high-mountain skimo experience.
Hike to Ďurkovú
