Cycling in Liptov: 5 routes every cyclist should ride

Liptov is best enjoyed from the saddle. One moment you’re pedalling along the shores of Liptovská Mara, a few kilometres later the Low and Western Tatras open up before you, and just when you think you’ve seen it all, a forest track, mountain pass, or picturesque village appears around the next corner.

Liptov really is made for cycling. There are more than 900 kilometres of way-marked cycle routes, from easy-going family rides to serious mountain challenges. E-bikers are well catered for too, with more than 30 charging stations across the region and plenty of places to hire an e-bike.

And the best thing about Liptov? You don’t have to choose between nature, views, and memorable experiences. You can have them all on one ride.

We’ve picked five routes of varying difficulty, so there’s something for everyone who wants to see Liptov on two wheels.

1. Cyklokorytnička: an easy-going ride for the whole family

👉 Ideal for:

families with children, recreational cyclists, and anyone who fancies a day out in nature without any extreme climbs.

Difficulty: easy
Distance: 23 km one way
Elevation gain: 340 m
Time: approx. 1 hr 45 min

If you want to start cycling in Liptov without heading straight into a big climb, Cyklokorytnička  is a great place to begin.

The route runs from Ružomberok towards Korytnica along the trackbed of a former narrow-gauge railway. It follows the River Revúca through Biely Potok, Jazierce, Podsuchá, and Liptovská Osada before reaching the former spa at Korytnica. Turn off by Koliba Bodega in Podsuchá, lock up your bikes at the entrance to the upper Brankov valley, and a 20-minute walk will take you to Brankov Waterfall.

Information panels along the way tell the story of the old railway, while the Revúca Valley provides a wonderfully relaxed backdrop to the ride.

Tip: In summer, make the trip even more memorable with a ride on the historic Korýtko train. It carries bikes too and will take you from Ružomberok railway station to the start of Cyklokorytnička.

2. Po stopách zaplavených obcí Liptovskej Mary: a bike ride with a story

👉 Ideal for:

cyclists who want to combine a ride with getting to know the region.

Difficulty: moderate
Distance: 25,6 km
Elevation gain: 410 m
Time: approx. 2,5 hr

Liptovská Mara is one of Liptov’s best-known landmarks. But beneath its waters lies the story of dozens of villages that had to make way for the construction of the reservoir.

That story comes to life on the themed Following the Lost Villages of Liptovská Mara cycle route. The circular ride starts in Bešeňová and takes you through Vlachy, across the Liptovská Mara dam, and on through Bobrovník and Tvarožná. Along the way, there are views across the water and the iconic Kyseľovec photo spot.

So this isn’t “just another cycle route”. It’s a ride through Liptov’s past, with beautiful countryside all around you.

Tip: Stop at the Bešeňová travertines, where you can top up your water at the beautiful colourful cascades formed by constantly flowing mineral water. Besides calcium carbonate, the water contains magnesium, sulphur, and iron. Another option is the Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum.

3. Upper Čierny Váh Reservoir: for a real taste of the mountains

👉 Ideal for:

cyclists looking for a shorter but more intense mountain ride. An e-bike might come in very handy here.

Difficulty: moderate
Distance: 12,7 km
Elevation gain: 420 m
Time: 1,5 – 2 hr

The route may not be long, but don’t let that fool you. The ride from Východná to the Upper Čierny Váh Reservoir makes you work for your reward at the top.

From Východná, you’ll ride past ponds and the railway before climbing through the forest to the upper reservoir of the Čierny Váh pumped-storage hydroelectric power station. The higher you climb, the more the landscape changes. And once you finally reach the top, you’ll know the effort was worth it.

Tip: Every year in early July, Východná hosts a folklore festival in its unique wooden amphitheatre. The complex is also home to the Májka Viewing Tower, with fantastic views. You’ll also find Východná Farm here, where you can take a farm tour and sample some of its excellent cheeses. Cheeses from Východná carry the Product of Liptov label.

4. Across the Choč Mountains: views, forests, and watermills

👉 Ideal for:

mountain bikers and cyclists looking for a more physical ride.

Difficulty: difficult
Distance: 35,7 km
Elevation gain: 810 m
Time: approx. 3,5 hr

This one is for riders who like hills, forest tracks, and a proper dose of adventure. The circular route starts in Kvačany and takes you through Bukovina, Malatiná, Malé Borové, and the Kvačianska Valley, before returning to Kvačany. Expect field and forest tracks, climbs, descents, and plenty of views.

One of the loveliest stops is the watermills at Oblazy, well worth the short detour. And then? Back in the saddle and onwards. This route shows exactly why Liptov is such a rewarding place for mountain biking: one day, one bike, and a remarkable variety of scenery.

5. Vlkolínec – Pribylina: a big ride across Liptov

👉 Ideal for:

experienced cyclists looking for a tough ride and plenty of Liptov to see along the way.

Difficulty: difficult
Distance: 68 km
Elevation gain: 1 518 m
Time: approx. 7 hr

And finally, something for anyone who wants more than a short outing and is ready for a proper cycling challenge. The Vlkolínec – Pribylina educational cycle route is one of the most interesting rides in Liptov. It links two of the region’s major visitor attractions and takes you right across Liptov. The route starts at UNESCO-listed V. before continuing through Ružomberok, Liptovská Štiavnica, Partizánska Ľupča, Lazisko, Pavčina Lehota, the Demänovská Valley, Liptovský Ján, Liptovský Hrádok, and Vavrišovo, all the way to Pribyliny. And that’s what makes it special. It isn’t just a cycle route – it’s a journey right across Liptov.

In a single day, you can take in the traditional architecture of Vlkolínec, views of the Tatras, historic villages, the River Belá, Liptovský Hrádok, and the Liptov Village Museum in Pribylina.

Cycling in Liptov? There’s a route for everyone. Whether you’re cycling with the children, riding an e-bike, or regularly clocking up dozens of kilometres, Liptov has a route to suit your taste and fitness level. Take your pick from singletrack trails, a ride around Liptovská Mara, a serious climb up to Čierny Váh, or the full-day challenge from Vlkolínec to Pribylina.

And the best part? Sometimes it’s not really about the route at all. Sometimes it’s the view of the Tatras. Sometimes it’s a coffee in a Liptov village. Cold water from a mountain spring. Bryndza dumplings after the ride.
Or simply that feeling when you put your bike away in the evening and know you’ve experienced a little piece of Liptov that day.
