A 740-year-old town that can still surprise you
Liptovský Mikuláš is celebrating a major anniversary this year. But forget dry dates. Here, history isn’t confined to books. You can experience it right out in the streets, through sounds, images, and the stories of the people who made the town what it is.
Let the stories guide you
The Historical Compass project takes you through stories you might otherwise miss. Simply play the recordings on your phone or read the accompanying information, and suddenly you’re right in the middle of the events that shaped the town. You’ll hear the recollections of people connected with its history and sounds from the period, while archive photographs bring the past to life before your eyes.
You’ll discover, for example, how difficult and unhappy the poet Janko Kráľ’s childhood was, the excitement that surrounded the first sermon delivered in Slovak, and which building was constructed on the orders of Maria Theresa.
Look back in time
Windows into the Past shows you places around the town as they looked decades ago. Large-format historic photographs reveal Mikuláš at different points in its history. Scan the QR codes and there’s even more to discover, including additional images, context, and details.

Walk through the historic centre and hear the most fascinating stories right where the events themselves took place. You’ll discover the town as it is today, trace its story back to its earliest history, and discover the new features created for the 740th anniversary of its first written mention.
If you’d like a break from technology, you can join a guided tour from the Information Centre every Monday at 6 pm until the end of August.
Just come to the Information Centre, buy your ticket, and set off. No complicated planning required.
Bonus: continue your visit at the museum
The tour finishes right by the Janko Kráľ Museum, where you can round off your visit with the new exhibition. It offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary residents and the local nobility in medieval Mikuláš.
