Where to fly a kite in Liptov
Autumn in Liptov isn’t only about hiking, colourful leaves, and cooler days. It’s also the perfect time for one of the most popular family pastimes – kite-flying. The fresh mountain air and the breeze playing with the ribbons of kites create the ideal backdrop for moments with children amid Liptov’s beautiful countryside.
Liptov has plenty of great places where you can let your kite soar freely into the sky:
Calvary above Ružomberok – a traditional site for autumn kite festivals. Every October, an event is held here where kites fill the sky. The location also offers lovely views of the surrounding area.
Forest Park Háj Nicovô in Liptovský Mikuláš – a popular venue for the family-friendly Šarkaniáda kite festival and accompanying programme. The view from Háj takes in both the town and Mount Kriváň, and in autumn the tree-lined avenue leading up is spectacular.
Forest park with augmented-reality mobile app – ideal if you want to learn something new along the way.
The area around the observation tower in Pavčina Lehota – another excellent spot where your kite can climb high.
Nearby you’ll also find a summer bobsleigh track and bouncy castles.
Hrabovo Valley – offers peaceful meadows and easy access. You can park for free by the Malinô Brdo resort. If you’d like to go higher, take the cable car up to the Hotel Malina and the meadows near Vlkolínec, also great for flying kites.
Tip: the village of Vlkolínec, just nearby, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Krochva Hill near Liptovský Trnovec offers wonderful views and an ideal place for kite-flying.
At the top, you’ll find wooden benches and a table where you can rest – please remember take your litter away with you.
Tip: If you’ve already visited Liptovský Trnovec, stop by the beach at Maracamp, which has its own special charm.
It’s also a great place to stop and take photos on the cycling trail dedicated to the history of Liptovská Mara. If you’re an avid cyclist or e-biker, you can explore Kyseľovec as part of this cycling tour – Flooded Villages of Liptovská Mara.
Take a short walk along the Artists’ Trail in the beautiful surroundings of Spa Lúčky. It runs behind the Choč Spa Hotel, Dependance Liptov, and the Balneotherapy Centre. The trail is dedicated to well-known artists who once worked in Lúčky. By the gazebo honouring Milan Michal Harminc, the renowned architect, you’ll find a perfect open space for kite-flying.
Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum – a unique archaeological site and reconstructed Celtic settlement from the Iron Age – is another great place for kite-flying. As you enjoy watching your kite, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Liptovská Mara, the Western Tatras, and the surrounding hills. Havránok also offers the chance to explore reconstructed wooden fortifications, shrines, houses, and original structures from the Púchov culture (around the first century BCE). After your visit, you can continue along a short trail offering further viewpoints over the reservoir and the landscape of Liptov.
