Discover the attractions that make Liptov unique
Think you know Liptov inside out? This summer may still have a few pleasant surprises in store. One of Slovakia’s favourite holiday regions has once again added new places well worth discovering. Alongside its popular water parks, Liptovská Mara and mountain adventures, there is now Woodlandia – a unique nature park where monumental wooden animals from Indonesia come to life among the trees.
And while you’re in Liptov, explore some of the region’s other unusual sights too. In a single day, you can find yourself among Slovak castles and then surrounded by some of the world’s great architectural icons.
Woodlandia – where a Slovak forest meets exotic art
Just a few minutes from Liptovská Mara, in the peaceful village of Liptovská Anna, a new attraction has opened unlike anything else in Slovakia. Woodlandia is a family nature park where monumental animal sculptures made from teak take centre stage.
Their creator comes from the Indonesian island of Java and works with the natural shapes of tree roots and trunks, making every sculpture unique. As you explore the woodland grounds, you will come across deer, horses, wolves, chamois, swans, a moose, piglets, and other animals that seem perfectly at home in the surrounding landscape.
But Woodlandia is more than an open-air gallery. Its extensive grounds offer welcome shade on hot summer days, places to relax, barbecue areas, and an unusual Way of the Cross. This is an ideal spot for a peaceful family day out where visitors of all ages can unwind.
All of Slovakia in one walk
If historic landmarks fascinate you, head to Minislovensko in Liptovský Ján. Beneath the shade of conifers, you’ll find meticulously crafted 1:25 scale models of Slovak castles, châteaux, churches, bell towers, and other important buildings.
They include Bojnice Castle, Strečno Castle, and Levoča’s historic town hall, along with many other architectural gems from across Slovakia. Another major attraction, particularly for younger visitors, is the working model railway, with several lines and ten trains. And here is one impressive detail: the largest model of all, Strečno Castle, weighs 620 kilograms.
Around the world without a passport
Did you know that you can visit the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, and the Sydney Opera House in a single afternoon in Liptov?
ZOOKontakt in Liptovský Mikuláš is home to an unusual exhibition of metal miniatures of famous buildings from around the world. There are twelve meticulously crafted models, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Statue of Liberty, the Petronas Towers, Dubai’s Burj Al Arab, Belgium’s Atomium, and Slovakia’s Kamzík TV Tower.
Combining craftsmanship with a passion for travel, this unusual exhibition is an enjoyable addition to the popular zoo.
