History, culture and monuments
Visitors to the Liptov region are particularly attracted by the variety of attractions. The attractive offer of Liptov also includes an interesting history, culture and local monuments. The village of Vlkolínec is one of the biggest prides of Liptov. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on November 11, 1993. The listing confirms the uniqueness and universal value of cultural or natural sites that require protection for the benefit of all mankind. Vlkolínec is worth visiting all year round, but especially during the summer holidays, the program in the village is still enriched. The specifics of this place is that the village is still alive, it is not a common open-air museum. Vlkolínec is still home to residents and some of the houses are used as weekend cottages.
Open-air museum in Pribylina
Another view of the history of Liptov is offered by the Open-Air Museum in Pribylina. Under the southern slopes of the Western Tatras stands the Museum of the Liptov village Pribylina documenting the folk architecture of Liptov. Construction began in connection with the flooding of a large area west of Liptovský Mikuláš during the construction of the Liptovská Mara waterworks. Of the eleven flooded villages, the most important cultural monuments have been brought here, which today form the basis of the museum’s exposition. In addition to exhibiting at the museum, they regularly organize live tours, often with tastings of past dishes and pets are still kept there. A visit to the open-air museum is an experience for young and old.
Park MiniSlovakia
PARK MINI SLOVAKIA in Liptovský Ján offers a set of well-known Slovak monuments in a reduced form. These are true copies of buildings in the scale of 1:25. Visitors will find Bojnice Castle, the ruins of Strečno Castle, but also the bell tower from Kežmarok or the town hall from Levoča. It is worth to visit the Janko Kráľ Museum in Liptovský Mikuláš to learn about the history of Jánošík. Not so long ago, the Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology underwent a huge reconstruction. Such a museum has no equivalent in Slovakia. It is interactive and full of interesting information about nature and caving. Only here can visitors enter the bear’s lair, look for fossils with a whisk or go through a cave creep.
Visitors to Liptov will also find a beautiful monument during their tourism through the Kvačianská valley, local Mills – Oblazy that show how people in the past were able to cope and use the water element. It is one of the last preserved monuments of its kind, in addition, incorporated into the original natural environment. In many establishments in this section, it is even possible to take advantage of discounts via the Liptov Region Card. The world premieres of films, as well as broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Belsh Theater in Moscow, are again brought by the Golden Apple Cinema in Liptovský Mikuláš.
