The building of the Gallery was originally the seat of an Evangelical (Lutheran) folk school. The building now bears the name of Peter Michal Bohúň who worked as a teacher in this school. He was one of the finest artists of the 19th century focusing mainly on portrait paintings and the author of many altar pictures.

The Gallery features around 5,000 plastic and graphic works, photographs, drawings and paintings. This collection is presented in four permanent exhibitions. In addition, the Gallery has two showrooms that usually feature temporary exhibitions, concerts, etc.

The Large Showroom in the Gallery of P.M. Bohúň is the largest showroom area of its kind in Slovakia. The Gallery is also the seat of the House of Photography.
